چکیده

This paper considers the acknowledgment procedure used to assure the delivery of packets on the radio interface of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), where GPRS system is a new GSM service. It is currently being standardized for GSM Phase 2+ and provides packet switched data services over GSM network resources. This paper gives a rapid description of the GPRS radio interface, and its sublayers, with a special attention to the Radio Link Control and Medium Access Control (RLC/MAC) layer procedures. Particularly, the acknowledgment parameters and operations are described and its performance is analyzed. The delay introduced by the acknowledgment procedure is evaluated analytically. In order to ameliorate the performance of the RLC acknowledgment mechanism, we propose and analyze a new additional hybrid FEC/ARQ mechanism, which can operate with the current one. The new mechanism permits to decrease the number of control blocks used for RLC acknowledgment and thus reduce the delay requested for a packet delivery.

Performance of LLC and TCP on GPRS Uplink with RLC Slot Level Retransmission

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of the logical link control (LLC) layer and the Transmission control protocol (TCP) layer in General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks. We evaluate the uplink throughput and delay performance of GPRS-LLC protocol with radio link control (RLC) layer using block level retransmission (BLR), as defined in the current GPRS standards, and compare it with ...

Performance of the GPRS RLC/MAC protocols with VoIP traffic

GSM/GPRS networks have been designed to carry both voice and data traffic. Our aims are to study the behaviour of the GPRS mechanisms (RLC/MAC layer and radio resource scheduler) when the application layer carries packetized voice, and determine if the quality of service provided by the network is suitable for the VoIP service. The paper includes a discussion about the voice source model, an an...

Performance Simulation for the General Packet Radio Service, GPRS

Within the next year the first GPRS wireless packet data networks will be operable in Europe. In this paper, we study the capacity of the GPRS air interface under various conditions. For the analysis of the underlying Radio Link Control (RLC) protocol and the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer a simulative approach using OPNET is applied. Performance results for the RLC/MAC protocol are given fo...

Capacity Evaluation of Resource Allocation Strategies in the GPRS System

A fundamental issue in GSM/GPRS networks planning is the choice of an appropriate resource allocation strategy at MAC layer to allow data and voice users to share the common transport media. Our goal is to quantitatively evaluate the convenience, in terms of efficient radio resources utilization, of reserving a few timeslots in each TDMA frame to GPRS traffic rather than adopting a “complete-sh...

Performance Analysis of RLC/MAC Protocol in General Packet Radio Service

We analyze the throughput and delay performance of the radio link control/media access control (RLC/MAC) protocol layers in General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks. Several time-slotted uplink radio frequency channels are shared by the mobiles on a request reservation based multiple access scheme. Using the theory of Markov chains, we derive expressions for the uplink throughput and delay ...
